This text is in the 'New Horizons in Regional Science' series edited by Professor Philip McCann. All the titles in the series are edited works. Sadly, in today's academic climate, books sent for review have more authors than chapters, with notable variations in quality and style. The first chapter typically presents a rationale for the book and the collection of essays therein. It is not unusual to find that the collection is disparate, reflecting the varied interests of the different authors. However, the collection of chapters has to be shoehorned into some 'coherent' groupings called 'sections' or 'parts'.rnSome attempts to justify such anthologies are better than others.
