Laminar Natural Convection in Tall Vertical Enclosures with Discrete Heat Sources

This work presents a numerical study of laminar natural convection in a two-dimensional vertical cavity with one discreetly heated and the other entirely cooled sidewalls. The cavity has a high aspect ratio (A ≥ 10) with the no heated parts of the sidewall and the horizontal walls which are adiabatic. The effects of the number of discrete heat sources (2 or 3), the aspect ratio(10 ≤ A ≤ 60) and the Rayleigh number Ra(10~3 ≤ Ra ≤ 10~5) on the airflow structures and the local and average convective heat transfer within the cavity are presented and analyzed. The obtained results show that the average heat transfer is proportional to the number of discrete heat sources and the Rayleigh number, while it is inversely proportional to the aspect ratio of the cavity.
