Though the problem of categorization belongs to the key issues of cognitive linguistics we do not seem to have a clear idea about its mechanisms. The existing mainstream -exemplar and prototype - approaches offer a static representation of categories structured around a central member. This gap seems to be filled in by Vantage Theory (VT), a relatively little known cognitive model, initially developed by the American anthropologist and linguist Robert E. MacLaury to explain the categorization of color (MacLaury 1997).
