In 2002, a panel of experts on second language learning and literacy was convened with the purpose of identifying, assessing and synthesising research on the literacy development of language-minority students. Developing Literacy in Second Language Learners is the final report of this panel. The book begins with an overview of the panel's charge, and then describes the methodology used to select the studies included in the panel's meta-analysis. A brief overview of the panel's findings in each domain studied follows this introductory material. The remainder of the book focuses in great detail on each of the following facets of literacy development and second language learners: Development of Literacy in Second Language Learners; Cross-Linguistic Relationships in Second Language Learners; Sociocultural Contexts and Literacy Development; Educating Language Minority Students; and Language and Literacy Assessment.
