Sweden's Environment Ministry April 12 said it will ban the use of bisphenol A in food packaging for children under 3, beginning Jan. 1, 2013. The ban primarily will affect the plastic safety packaging that covers baby food jars. Fines could apply for those who flout the new rules, Environment Ministry official Jerker Forssell told BNA April 16. A similar ban was introduced in neighboring Denmark in March 2010. Over the next three months, the ministry said, the nation's chemicals agency (Kemi) will consider whether to recommend bans on the use of the of BPA in receipts and tickets.
