European Commission Likely to Include Reduction Target in Food Waste Proposals

The European Commission plans by the end of the year to publish proposals on food waste that might include reduction targets for the European Union, the director-general of the commission's Environment Department said Oct. 18. Karl Falkenberg, speaking in Brussels at a seminar organized by the European Policy Center think tank, said about 30 percent of food in the EU is either wasted at the distribution stage-for example, food discarded by supermarkets-or is thrown away by consumers, and that much of the waste still goes to landfills in a number of countries.
