Brazil Court Annuls Settlement in Samarco Tailings Reservoir Spill Into Doce River

A Brazilian appeals court annulled a settlement that required Samarco Mineracao and its co-owners to pay 4.9 billion reais ($1.52 billion) through 2018 for damages caused by the deadly and environmentally catastrophic rupture of a Samarco tailings reservoir in November 2015. The Aug. 17 ruling also reinstated an earlier-dismissed, 20 billion real ($6.2 billion) lawsuit against Samarco and its co-owners, a federal prosecutor involved in the case told Bloomberg BNA.
