Three wars in the balkans in less than a decade not only showed how fragile the ethnic composition in the south-east of Europe is, but demonstrated also how nationalist opinions fuelled by the mass media produce real political conflict. This observation not only leads to the conclusion that European organisations are well advised to keep a closer eye on structural problems of freedom of the media in OSCE and Council of Europe member states, but should also promote the potential of using media as a effective instrument in conflict prevention. A look at the role of media in Greek-Turkish relations may serve as an example.
