Surveying the Northeast Asian market

Although there are a number of countries involved in Northeast Asian developments, this article focuses on three that have been widely identified as the primary economic and political drivers of events in the region: Japan, China and Korea. Since the possibility of a unified Korea (the Republic of Korea with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) is a central issue, the ROK and the DPRC are both addressed. It is also necessary to acknowledge the changed political environment due to the terrorist attacks in the United States in September 2001. In testimony delivered by Mr. Brad E Glosserman, Director of Research, Pacific Forum CSIS, before the House Committee on International Relations on September 15, 2001, he emphasized that the events of September 11, "have shifted the diplomatic momentum in Northeast Asia and that the Prime Minister of Japan has been the chief beneficiary."
