'SURPRISING' TAKE UP OF WIFI IN EUROPE

The European Commission has expressed surprise at the findings of a study it commissioned that shows that people are flocking to use WiFi internet - and the trend is set to continue. It finds that 71 % of all wireless data traffic delivered in 2012 to smartphones and tablets in the EU was by WiFi, which could rise to 78% by 2016. "The surprising results show how the cheaper cost to consumers of using WiFi hotspots is changing behaviour, and the study recommends extra spectrum be made available across the EU to support this rising demand," a statement notes.
