Performance, Fashion and the Modern Interior fleshes out the mutual relationship between spaces, clothes, and identities, devoting particular attention to the interior, that curious space where both private and public identities are rehearsed, produced, and challenged. The influence of design historian Penny Sparke's important work on space is felt throughout the volume, in which several authors argue against the old-fashioned and simplified division of private and public spaces and reveal the complex overlaps and points of tension between the two. The seventeen essays analyze how interior spaces are shaped by the activities, rituals, and social behaviors of the people who inhabit them, but also how these spaces and their specific interior designs influence and shift our own identities.
