摘要

Horace Walpole and the "little Gothic castle" that he created on the banks of the Thames near Twickenham from 1747 are essential for any consideration of eighteenth-century British architecture and design. The ideas and influences behind Walpole's extraordinary conception at Strawberry Hill are implicated in the reawakening of interest in Gothic at a time when neociassicism was the favored architectural trope of polite society. However, the exact nature of Strawberry Hill's influence on the academic antiquarian approach to Gothic Revival that was to follow, and on subsequent manifestations associated with nationalism, ecclesiology, and social reform, are the subject of scholarly debate.
