In their new book, Textile Technology and Design: From Interior Space to Outer Space, Deborah Schneiderman and Alexa Griffith Winton valiantly quote the often forgotten Dr. Samuel Johnson, using his astute definition of "Fabrick, any system or compages of matter: any body formed by the conjunction of dissimilar parts", as a rallying cry. This definition is key, otherwise the reader might think that the book is solely about textile innovation; it is not. It is a book that uses textiles and fabric sometimes as a springboard and sometimes as a metaphor, and sometimes ignoring the notion of textile all together in favor of pattern, surface, and prefabrication. The introduction by Susan Yelavich is a personal musing on the impact of textiles in the very everyday. Reflecting on the effect of coats and gloves on a "pillowed tourist", Yelavich sets a tone for deep investigation of what this thing called textile is and what it could mean. But it is the editors' introduction and their embrace of "Fabrick" that defines the real aspirations of the text and ever-changing definition of the nature of fabrication and materiality in the contemporary interior.
