Eclectic Outlook In Cologne

The "Ideal House" concept installations dominating the main exhibition hall at IMM [International Furniture Fair] Cologne 2004, visualised the homes of the future - in very different ways. One, by the much-feted French designers Ronan and Ewan Bouroullec, featured rooms with partition walls and ceiling hangings made of thousands of interlocking, translucent plastic 'chips', creating a spider's web effect. As for furniture, a melange of old and contemporary, notably Bouroullec-designed pieces for Cappellini and Vitra. The second interior was by another famed design duo: the Brazilian brothers Humberto and Fernando Campana. This was a barn-like affair built with planks of seemingly leftover timber. The 'message' to do with 'social context', recycling, natural materials. The main furniture here was a communal wooden table, big wooden planters, giant floor-cushions, and shaggy armchairs made of strips of wool designed by the brothers for Edra.
