HCI and the older population

The papers in this Special Issue serve not only as interesting and important studies in HCI and the older population, but also as indicators of what areas need more research and emphasis in the future. Certainly, traditional desktop applications will require more effective design solutions, particularly in the areas of information search and communication. But desktop solutions are only a part of the support that is required. Moving into home life and environmental support, we will need solutions that aid navigation and driving skills in motor vehicles. We will need user interfaces that provide motivation for maintaining healthy behaviours, such as exercise, medication management and social interaction. Through all of this, we must deal with issues of privacy and trust. The challenges are many and the papers in this issue give a hint to some of the useful approaches and practical solutions in this field that will become increasingly important and relevant.
