Introduction to the Special Issue: The Tricky Landscape of Developing Rating Scales in HCI

A plethora or rating scales have appeared in the HCI literature since 2000. The small glimpse offered here by commentaries on original publications and responses provided by the original authors of the selected papers testify to the complexity of the task of providing reliable, valid and useful scales for our extremely applied discipline. The ambiguity of the, still not well defined, constructs is evident in the papers presented here. Experts disagree on many of the important issues, longevity is rarely an objective, and it is hard for researchers and practitioners to select the scale(s) best suited to their particular purposes. However, the sheer number of available rating scales shows that many in the HCI community are seriously concerned about measurement and by sharing the fruits of their labor, we are confident that this aspect of the field will mature in its own good time.
