Editorial Insights and Implications: 28 Years Later: More Complex Futures of Computing

As intelligencestarts a new, 28th year in print and a new volume of monthly issvies, I thought it would be a propitious time to assess the future of computing and the future of the Internet. When I started this newsletter, in 1984, the net was in use in obscurity, barely known at all to the general public. Even when the net was "released," by the NSF (US National Science Foundation), to the populace at large, during the summer of 1987, the Internet was in a nascent form and the World Wide Web, the HTML web page coding language and applications like web browsers were still years away.
