Head of the US Federal Reserve Bank Warns About Inequality

Janet Yellin, chair of the United States Federal Reserve Bank, gave a speech this month where, instead of talking about quantitative easing or other arcane Fed matters, she focused instead on what she sees as rising inequality in the US. She focused on four areas of traditional opportunity: access to educational resources, having enough income to raise children, entrepreneurial business opportunities and inheritance. She described the inequality in each of those areas, citing results from the Fed Bank's triennial Survey of of 6,000 households on issues concerning Consumer Finances. Yellin cited lower intergenerational opportunity noting that it was: "lower in the United States than in most other advanced countries."
