Never Forgotten: The Search for and Discovery of Israel's Lost Submarine DAKAR

Forty-four years ago, within three months, the Israeli navy experienced its two major naval disasters to date. Immediately after the Six Day War, on 21 October 1967, four Egyptian sea-to-sea missiles hit and sunk the destroyer INS Eilat in the vicinity of Port Said, killing 47 of its crew. Soon after, at midnight of 25 January 1968, the newly commissioned submarine, INS Dakar, on her maiden voyage in the Mediterranean under the Israeli flag, transmitted its last known communication, somewhere between Crete and Cyprus.
