Semiconductor process technology is experiencing a quantum jump in gatecount, enabling companies to put up to 10 million gates on a single IC. However, traditional synthesis technology has not kept pace. In the past, design teams have worked around this through brute force, patching synthesis' shortcomings with ad-hoc solutions. But the problem has grown to a point that synthesis design productivity must advance.
