A history of ultrasonics continued: The Karl Deutsch connection

Arising from our History of Ultrasonics published in the May issue of INSIGHT, we are pleased to acknowledge a letter from Prof Dr-Ing Volker Deutsch, currently head of Karl Deutsch, on the subject. In it he refers to the pioneering work of his father Karl Deutsch working together with H W Branscheid to develop an ultrasonic flaw detector. They had some information concerning Firestone's reflectoscope, but started work unaware that Joseph Krautkraemer was also working in Germany in the same field. All were unaware that Sproule had already tackled the problem and had successfully introduced a working system in the UK. The following extracts are taken from the anglicised version of the company's publication, published in 1989, marking the occasion of their 40-year 'jubilee', and dedicated by Volker Deutsch to the memory of his father, who died in 1974.
