CPD is by now a well known acronym which crops up in all sorts of places. Continuing professional development is precisely what it says it is - involving training, in whatever form, to enable an individual (this means you!) to develop and broaden his or her expertise in order to be able to cope with the work challenges of next month and next year. The Institute has always supported a policy of CPD for its members. We organise Conferences and Seminars, publish INSIGHT and a lengthy list of textbooks and our Branches hold regular meetings, many of which are on relevant technical topics. So, the basis of a CPD scheme is in place. However, we can take a horse to water but can we make it drink? Perhaps a little encouragement is needed! How often in your formative years were you told to learn from your elders - those with more experience? Sometimes it works in reverse and we (slightly) more mature individuals should take a lesson from the youngsters. They are quite happy to accept that they are learning, still developing and seeking more knowledge. They are in the habit of learning and of being taught - they expect their careers to develop. As we get older there is the danger that we get into a position of knowing 'enough' to do the job in hand. A nice position to be in - a cosy niche - a stronghold - a bit of security! Sounds good, doesn't it?
