Finding faults with NDT - and solving the industry's perception problem

The common perception of non-destructive testing within industry at large is that it is simply a methodology for detecting faults within materials. Unfortunately, it is this misperception that has done much to prevent NDT from attaining the status that it rightly deserves as an essential engineering discipline. The users, rather than the appliers, of NDT tend to think of it as a necessary evil, something akin to an insurance policy, which is taken out under duress. This perception is largely a consequence of the fact that we, the practitioners, have been remiss in how we have sold our capabilities to the marketplace.
