CISE: Application-orientated R&D in NDE/NDT and structural integrity monitoring

CISE (Centro Informazioni Studi Esperienze) was founded in 1946, as part of the Italian power industry's effort to meet the rising challenge for nuclear power generation; in the '50s it was already a well-established R&D centre for nuclear power technology development and nuclear power plant design. The Italian power industry underwent nationalisation in 1962; the '70s witnessed the decline of nuclear power perspectives in Italy, culminating in the final withdrawal from this field in 1987. In the meantime, CISE had diversified and reoriented its skills and activities, by increasingly addressing non-nuclear power generation problems and by integrating R&D with the supply of specialised services and instrumentation. CISE's main activity areas are industrial diagnostics, materials science, environment and territory, advanced engineering and applied information science. Since 1979 CISE is a joint stock company, ENEL - the state-owned national utility - being its majority shareholder and main contractor.
