Research and test programmes have always played a primary role in the development of aviation technology in the Italian Air Force (IAF). Since the thirties, the Direzione Superiore degli Studi e delle Esperienze (IAF Major Authority of Studies and Experiments), located at Guidonia Air Force Base, has been one of the leading centres of aviation research in the world. Today, more than ever, modern strategies have placed great importance in the technological field. Scientific advances proceeded very rapidly, and the fallout has involved all areas of military and civilian applications. So the prominent role of technology requires a closer cooperation and interaction between military strategists and the scientific research community.
