Development of an ultrasonic testing system for detection of near-surface fatigue cracks in welded structures

This paper describes a new type of ultrasonic probe which has been used successfully to detect and measure fatigue cracks in welds, with the probe placed on the weld bead. A compact digital flaw detector for use with this probe is also described.
