Through the violet veil: an NDT perspective of UV.A

We have discussed what UV. A is and why we shall continue to need it to help us in our efforts to ensure the integrity of a wide range of workpieces in their suitability for purpose. We have also seen a brief review of the development of the evidence as to its potential effects on skin and we have discussed the protective measures which are currently available. We must accept that there are risks associated with all human activity and the wise course of action is to assess those risks and take steps to minimise them. The assessment of the use of UV. A for inspection in non-destructive testing indicates that we need to continue to use it. Past experience indicates that the risk is not severe and, with relatively straightforward precautions, the future use of UV.A in non-destructive testing can be managed satisfactorily.
