The history of inspection and testing in Sweden dates back to the beginning of this century. Following the second world war, with the increased production of complicated and highly stressed steel structures and equipment, the requirements for reliability and safety of operation of these products also increased. NDT, often radiographic testing, became an answer to these demands. Another example was the need to check castings to avoid rejection at a later stage of production after costly and extensive machining operations. Ultrasonic inspection became a cost-effective tool to solve this problem.
