It was anticipated by the Health and Safety Executive that publication of the Ionising Radiations Regulations in 1985 would result in a plethora of enquiries on how to interpret the Regulations practically. To clarify some of the more obvious general areas of uncertainty, an Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) was published coetaneously and in the succeeding ten years or so HSE has been especially helpful in attending to many more detailed queries from radiation workers and employers. From time to time it has been necessary to make minor amendments to the ACoP and in due course we might expect to see a full revision of the 1985 Regulations. Such changes are necessary to reflect the ever-increasing body of knowledge on the effects of radiation and help ensure that best practices in radiation protection are observed.
