Half a century of pioneering ultrasonics for Sonatest

Twelve years have passed since Insight editor David Gilbert last wrote a profile of Sonatest, the Milton Keynes-based designer and manufacturer of NDT equipment and consumables. There could be no better time for an update than the year of the company's 50th anniversary, so the editor travelled down the Ml a junction to talk to Sonatest Ltd MD Wayne Woodhead... Founded in 1958 by William Henderson and David Merrifield, Sonatest moved to Milton Keynes in 1973 and in 1975 Sonatest was acquired by Balteau of Belgium, whose X-ray products Sonatest had distributed in the UK. Then in 1981 Balteau itself was taken over by Schlumberger. In 1982 Frank Sansom, from Schlumberger's Solartron Instrumentation division, was appointed General Manager, Sonatest, and in 1984 Sonatest became part of the new Schlumberger Transducers Division.
