This issue of Insight publishes a selection of papers presented at the BINDT 50th Annual Conference that were judged to have been some of the best. This selection includes the views of the chairmen of the various sessions at the conference. In addition to these papers, last year's landmark conference contained a number of presentations which looked at the changes and advances that have taken place in NDT over the past 50 years. Inspection based on a wide range of techniques had clearly been transformed by the impact of computers on data processing. New inspectors today employ time-of-flight diffraction and phased arrays as routine in ultrasonic inspection and use computers to enable them to move from data to decision rapidly and efficiently. Our training schools are world leaders in teaching inspectors to carry out NDT using traditional methods, such as magnetic particle inspection, dye penetrant and radiography, alongside advanced eddy current, thermal and ultrasonic techniques.
