Peter David Weedon

The NDT industry has been saddened to hear of the loss on Monday 11 July 2011 of Mr Peter Weedon. Peter was born on 28 October 1928 in Morden, Surrey, and became a member of BINDT in 1955. He was widely known and respected in the field of ultrasonic testing and was at the forefront of the design and development of ultrasonic inspection systems from the sixties for the rail, power generation and aerospace industries. At the age of 19 he joined the Royal Navy engineering division, where his interest in NDT was born. After two years' service he joined Solus-Schall in London, performing industrial ultrasonic, magnetic particle and radiography inspection. During these early years he spent two years at the Woomera Rocket Range in Perth, Western Australia, before returning to the UK in 1955 to work at Stanlow Oil Refinery. At this time in the UK, Solus-Schall represented the German organisations Krautkramer and Forster. In addition to solving customer problems, Solus-Schall was also a research establishment and provided technical NDT education courses (this company was morphed into Wells-Krautkramer). It was during this period that Peter, together with the late John Hislop, began to specialise in ultrasonic inspection and transducer design.
