In any situation, it's advisable to link graphics rather than embed them. Doing so helps to keep down the publication's memory requirements, which prevents the occurrence of various memory-related problems. Embedding a bitmapped line art image with a file size of 10 K won't affect a publication's file size much, but a graphic TIFF file with a file size of 30 MB will.
