WECC approves new Standards: The board of the Western Elec tricity Coordinating Council earlier this month approved seven "Tier 1" reliability standards to meet the requirements of FERC and North American Electric Reliability Corp. The new standards replace eight that were developed by the WECC in 2007. The old standards needed minor refinements, said a WECC spokesman Thursday. If approved by NERC, the new standards will need to be cleared by FERC to become mandatory and enforceable. The standards are for power system stabilizers, protection system and remedial action scheme misoperation, qualified transfer path unscheduled flow relief, transmission maintenance, automatic voltage regulators, and contingency reserves. The WECC has also adopted regional criteria affecting transmission system performance and energy tagging.
