Islander East throws in the towel on appeal of state ruling; AGA calls project 'dead'

Marking an end to the project as currently envisioned, developers of the beleaguered Islander East gas pipeline project have withdrawn an appeal from the US Department of Com merce.rnThe proposed 260,000 Dt/d pipeline, a joint venture of Spec tra Energy and National Grid, would have run about 50 miles from North Haven, Connecticut, to Yaphank, New York. FERC approved the project in 2001, but in 2004 the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection denied a key water quality permit to the project, saying it posed too great a danger to the Long Island Sound.
