AEP agrees to pay penalty to resolve alleged reliability standard violations

American Electric Power Service has agreed to pay $570,000 to settlealleged reliability standard violations stemming in part fromwidespread inaccuracies in AEP’s facility ratings which posed a seriousrisk of equipment failure or load shedding, according to a Nov. 30notice of penalty.About one-fifth of AEP’s facilities had inaccurate ratings, accordingto the notice filed by the North American Electric Reliability Corp. Whenthe ratings were corrected, most changed by less than 10%, the noticesaid. But one line rating had to be decreased 84% and another had tobe increased 1,095%, according to the notice filed with the FederalEnergy Regulatory Commission.
