FERC finds proposal to create Southeast Energy Exchange Market deficient

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is seeking more details from a group of utilities looking to establish a new energy exchange market in the US Southeast. Led by Southern Company, the group asked FERC in February to approve the proposed intrahour trading platform, dubbed the Southeast Energy Exchange Market (SEEM), which is estimated to eventually save consumers between $40 million and $50 million in its early years. Savings would be achieved by modernizing an existing bilateral trading system that allows utilities to supply excess energy through spare transmission capacity.
