NYISO details market design projects affecting power pricing over next five years

The New York Independent System Operator is working on multiple projects to improve power price formation and reliability through market design changes in its energy and capacity markets, including constraint-specific transmission shortage pricing, enhanced fast-start pricing and locational marginal pricing of capacity. “Wholesale energy and capacity market products form price signals that indicate both current and future reliability needs, incentivizing both real-time performance and long-term investment,” the grid operator said in its 2019 Master Plan, posted Tuesday on the NYISO website. The changing portfolio of power generation resources serving New York’s electric needs requires an ongoing review of NYISO’s existing market products and planning processes to ensure the continued ability to efficiently and reliably serve New York’s power requirements, NYISO said.
