FERC clears NYISO plan to further speed, improve interconnection in the state

New York Independent System Operator can move forward with interconnection process enhancements the grid operator said would give power generating facility developers more options and flexibility and make the existing study process more efficient, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said. The improvements, seen aiding New York’s ability to more quickly get new generation onto the grid, reflect NYISO’s discussions with stakeholders and developers and the grid operator’s desire to balance the varying interests of different sectors operating on the grid. They come as New York has put forth ambitious climate goals calling for 70% of the state’s electricity to come from renewables by 2030 and 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040, with procurement targets of 6 GW of distributed solar by 2025, 3 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 9 GW of offshore wind by 2035.
