Xylitol, a five-carbon sugar alcohol, is commercially being used as a natural sweetener in several food products, including soft drinks and confectionery. Xylitol is ideal as arnsweetener for diabetics as its metabolism does not require insulin and it also does not cause dental caries. It is said to have had a preventive effect against acute otitis in children by impairing the growth of otopathogen. It is also found in small quantities in fruits such as strawberries, plums, and pears.
