Large numbers of desktop personal computers (PCs) are used in many organizations and enterprises worldwide. While the cost of desktop PCs have gone down over the years, the cost of maintenance and support has not been gainful. In fact, over 70% of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of a PC is the result of maintenance and management of hardware and software on the client computer. With a typical PC being composed of hardware components, moving parts, operating components, drivers and applications, the need for frequent maintenance is inevitable. This maintenance also forms the majority of the workload of helpdesk staff in any organization. Additionally, conventional PC environments provide a lot of end-user autonomy, and a great degree of leniency in issues of power consumption, security and license controls-things that may not always be desirable for an organization to allow.
