In the past decade, there has been an exponential growth in the amount of data traffic flowing through the Internet. According to recent industry estimates, the amount of data traffic on the Internet has increased from 20,000 Tera Bytes (TB)/month to 35,000 TB/month in 2000 to 1,200,000 to TB/month 1,800,000 TB/month in 2008. One of the chief technological advancements that has facilitated the drastic increase in Internet traffic and optical fiber bandwidth is wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).
