An Innovative Platform for Reducing Power Consumption in Mobile Handsets

摘要

Conventional mobile and wireless communication services involved mainly voice and narrowband data, with bandwidth usage not exceeding 100 megabytes (MB) per month per user on an average. However, with the advent of mobile broadband technologies such as worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and third generation (3G) technology, mobile phones and smart phones are being used for accessing the mobile Web at high data rates. Accessing the Internet on the mobile phone consumes 10 times more power as opposed to voice calls, and hence, mobile broadband-enabled cellular phones and smart phones do not last for long hours without requiring a battery recharge. Users often find it annoying to recharge the batteries on their mobile phones on a daily basis. Consequently, handset manufacturers are scouting for a solution that could improve the power efficiency of 3G/fourth generation (4G) mobile phones.
