Industry trends indicate that consumer interest in smartphones has been growing rapidly in the past few years. Despite the economic slowdown, smartphone sales continued to steadily increase in 2009 owing to the introduction of powerful, do-it-all smartphones and smartphone operating systems (OS) from companies such as US-based Apple, Palm, Google Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Finland-based Nokia, Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC) and others. The consumer interest in smartphones, which mimic the capabilities of a personal computer, is expected to persist in the future and smartphone shipments are anticipated to cross 400 million by 2012, according to industry estimates.
