Over the past years, there has been a tremendous amount of research and development (R&D) carried out in the field of energy storage solutions for power grid applications. This has been mostly caused by the need to balance frequency/voltage fluctuations and irregularities that often emerge between electricity supply and demand in the grid. It has been show n that applying electricity storage solutions to power grids has the potential to remove the necessity to use electric power as soon as it is created on the grid, resulting in a more optimized and flexible use of electrical power. This means that more optimized and flexible use of electric energy are possible. However, this has been very difficult to achieve, since the storage capacity and reliability of such devices were insufficient for power grid applications.
