This paper highlights the importance of site characterization for predicting deep excavation behaviour and usefulness ofrnfield instrumentation in evaluating stiffness properties of backfilled soil through analysing a deep excavation carried out atrna nuclear facility site located along East Cost of India. The field-monitored data along with finite element software werernemployed to predict the behaviour of soil during deep excavation. A series of back-calculations were performed in finiternelement software by varying stiffness properties, using different soil models, and displacements obtained were comparedrnwith those obtained from filed. This coupled analysis provided an insight into in situ stiffness properties of backfilled soil,rnwhich can be used for analysing and optimizing future excavations in backfilled soil as part of infrastructure developmentrnand expansion of facilities.
