Years after word banished WordPerfect and Excel dispatched Lotus 1-2-3, Office applications are still the proverbial goose that laid the golden egg at Redmond. In fact, Information Worker revenue at Microsoft, which includes the Office system of programs, raked in almost $12 billion in revenue in 2006, a cool $500 million more than the year before — and that's before the company issued its Office 2007 update! But if Google s announcement of a major upgrade of Google Apps last week means anything, its that Office's days may be numbered.
