Conventional wisdom says the larger and more global an IT project, the more likely it is to fail. Janey Place, VP of E-commerce strategy at Mellon Financial Corp., doesn't dispute such wisdom. Yet during the past 18 months, she's been part of a $30 million effort to inject Internet initiatives throughout the Pittsburgh company by creating a single E-business infrastructure that every business unit would use.
