Intel says it's going to bring unmatched price and performance value to the enterprise server market with its launch of the Itanium 2 processor this week. If all goes as planned, the chipmaker says, Itanium 2 will push Intel-based servers deep, into the data center and provide lower hardware, training, and maintenance costs. That's a big if. Itanium 2 is Intel's second-generation 64-bit chip. But technology buyers still view the technology as unproven. "I have to see it in operation; I'm not going to put a $6 billion operation at risk," says Richard Gius, senior VP of IT at Allegiance Corp., a McGaw Park, Ill., Cardinal Health Inc. subsidiary that makes health-care products.
