By the end of next year, TIAA-CREF, a national provider of financial services and pensions with $270 billion in assets, will have spent at least $18 million on a new, 20,000-square-foot data center in Charlotte, N.C. Critical to the center are the computers and networks needed to handle the company's data processing. Equally important, however, is the technology that will keep the data center humming through storms, accidental shutdowns, routine maintenance, system upgrades, and emergencies: an uninterruptible power supply.
